Medical Illustrator

Only recently I heard about this career called a medical illustrator and a medical legal illustrator, I guess we all take those pictures and charts on the walls of doctor's offices and medical institutions for granted.

So you have worked hard and you have earned a degree in art. Now what do you do? Many artists find themselves in the predicament of finding gainful employment in a seemingly hopeless sea of impossibilities. However, there is hope for the art graduate who has a decent background in biology. You may want to look into the position of medical illustrator for your employment opportunities.

The employee works closely with hospital personnel and scientists to produce a portfolio of medical images and graphics. These images are used in patient care. They are helpful in educating students in the field of medicine and they are also used in the realm of research. The medical illustrator provides a crucial service to the field of medicine.

A medical illustrator doesn’t just draw. He also uses photography to provide a wide range of images for medical personnel in a hospital setting. The medical illustrator uses a number of different types of media to create helpful images for hospital staff.

One of the skills the employee may need is video production. Your parents probably scoffed at the idea of your taking that video production class in college. That class can really pay off if you get a position as a medical illustrator in your local hospital.

The medical illustrator may also be a skilled photographer. The necessity of capturing the right images in the field of medicine is crucial to the future of medical practices. The images can be transferred from the hospital to the classroom so that students can have a virtual experience of the hospital atmosphere as well as graphic images of what to expect in the field.

Having a general knowledge of the field of medicine and having a talent for art are not the only requirements for the position of medical illustrator. The employee has to be mature and should be tactful in dealing with patients and the patients’ families. This position is not for the immature.

Just because you have that degree in art does not mean that you are ready to be a medical illustrator. There is a three-year program for potential employees to complete before taking on the responsibilities that the job requires.

If you are akin to the classic artists and photographers but you still want to be involved in helping others through the field of medicine then the position of medical illustrator may be the right job for you.
